Choosing a Marine Surveyor.

The best Marine Surveyors have something in common- a broad range of essential experience and knowledge involving the construction, maintenance, and safe operation of boats, yachts, and commercial vessels. In fact, anyone can call him or herself a “marine surveyor” and start a small business- the Marine Survey profession is not subject to licensing or other government regulation. However, some marine surveyors are permitted to use a designation denoting membership in accrediting organizations that require members to meet strict professional, technical, and ethical standards.

A Professional Marine Surveyor will provide you with a properly prepared report that will be accepted by your bank and/or insurance company. Talk to prospective marine surveyors and ask questions! What does the survey include, and what type of reporting format is used? Do they use ABYC, NFPA, and CFR (USCG) standards as guidelines for their inspection and report? How much will it cost? (Hint- You get what you pay for!) How long will the inspection take? A thorough inspection will not be rushed. It will depend upon the type of survey required, and based on vessel size, age, condition, equipment, and onboard systems. There may be additional services available such as engine surveys, oil analysis, galvanic and stray corrosion testing, ultrasonic inspection, infrared examination, moisture profiling, as well as other non-destructive testing. There may be additional charges for these and other services.

Well conducted surveys can provide reliable information on the vessel’s condition and value, but they are not guarantees. The surveyor reports on the condition of the vessel, in accessible areas, only as it existed at the time of the inspection. It’s not likely, but the condition can change as soon as the surveyor walks off the dock. The survey report can be seen as a “snapshot” of the condition and value of the vessel at the time of the inspection.
