Towing large tenders has become a trend, and for good reasons. A larger, center-console boat can be ideal for guests and crew when the towing yacht arrives in the cruising area. But longer voyages and seasonal re-positioning, for example, greatly increase the chances of encountering hazardous sea conditions. And there is very little published information regarding best practices, techniques, and guidelines for safe and successful towing. Much of what has become “normal” is rooted in convenience rather than good seamanship.
It’s been our experience that underwriters can recognize that a submitted towing plan is not within their company’s risk appetite. But without the credibility of professional experience, the underwriter is at a loss for how to tactfully explain a rejection to a client, or to provide specific solutions for safe towing in order to mitigate the chance of a loss.
